When summer hits, we are often celebrating the long days, sunshine, and opportunities to ride without having five layers and freezing. Just like winter, summer months can provide challenges to riding that you and your horse must deal with. Extreme heat is something to consider each summer.
5 Tips to Combat Summer Heat
- Keep fans in the barn and over stalls for constant airflow on your horse.
-
Hydration is critical. Ensure clean access to water and an electrolyte supplement.
- To cool an overheated horse, use a water-soaked sponge or hose with repeated application until you notice they have cooled down.
-
Mitigate stress for your horse during extreme heat such as repelling flies by using Fly Bye! Plus as this could compound and multiply heat stress issues.
-
Change your schedule when needed to accommodate the weather. Don’t ride in the peak heat. Choose mornings or late afternoons to avoid direct exposure to high temperatures and humidity.
