Winter Horse Care: 5 Tips to help you and your horse through cold months

Winter weather and cool temperatures can not only impact you, but also your horse and their needs. Keeping your horses happy throughout the winter so you are prepared for the upcoming show season, trail rides, endurance competitions and all the wonderful activities warm weather brings is integral toward optimizing performance. As winter sets in, let’s look at 5 tips to help you and your horse through the cold temperatures!

  1. Hydration

Water in the summer is just as important in the winter. Feeds such as grain and hay may increase during the winter. These foods typically have around 15% moisture content, opposed to pastureland grass of 60 – 80%. Additionally, water buckets may freeze overnight in colder climates, which may limit access. Take note of your horse’s access to freshwater and how much they are drinking throughout the winter.

  2. Provide Shelter

Shelter in pastureland or dry paddocks allows horses to have protection from inclement weather throughout the entire year. During the winter it is especially important to shield from chilly temperatures when horses are turned out. This will also allow for a broader range of temperatures your horse may tolerate during turnout.

  3. Blanket Usage

There are different blankets for different temperatures. If you choose to blanket your horse during colder months, ensure that you have the correct blanket based on the temperature outside. This will make sure your horse is comfortable as temperatures change throughout the day.

  4. Grooming & Equine Care

Depending on where your horse resides, grooming needs may be different. For example, in the southern United States, owners may have the option to bathe horses more often to keep coats free of mud and debris. Should that be the case, we suggest, Fly Bye! Plus Shampoo for its deep cleaning, moisturizing, and non-slick shine. Additionally, manes and tails can become tangled and dirty. Our Pony Polish for Luxurious Locks is an excellent detangler to keep your horse tangle free throughout the winter.

  5. Hoof Care

Wet, muddy and frozen conditions can contribute to difficult care for hooves. Picking hooves daily is important, along with trimming hooves at regular intervals. Slippery and potential icy conditions can put additional strain on tendons. Careful consideration while moving horses from barn to pastures or during riding is critical throughout the winter.
